New Client Version.  -
Finally! I've updated the Windows client software to support Firefox 3.x and Opera 10.x. I'm working on Chrome support now and hopefully will have it available in a couple of weeks. Although this version of the client appears to be very stable and it's the version that I'm personally using now, please make sure to backup your bookmarks before you install this latest version.

Here is a link: http://www.sync2it.com/download/beta.php

Any feedback that you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Connection Problems?  -
Problem: Yellow or Grey arrows on the system tray icon with the status of "Server unavailable". No synchronization occurring.

History: This problem apparently was caused by changing the DNS entries for Sync2It.com while performing routine network maintenance. The exact mechanism that introduced the bug is unknown at this time but an extra "w" was stored in the URL of the registry entry that Sync2It uses to communicate with the server. You can verify this bug by right-clicking on the Sync2It icon in your system tray and selecting "Tools->Find Duplicate Links". A browser window will contain the incorrect URL in the address bar and no web page will be loaded. (Note the 4 w's in the address)

How to fix the problem:

Step 1: From the 'Start' button, select 'Run' and type regedit.
Step 2: Navigate to this registry folder: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sync2It\BookmarkSync
Step 3: Verify that the settings for 'Root' and 'Server' are correctly set to http://www.sync2it.com and not http://wwww.sync2it.com (Note that there are 4 w’s).

You can now right-click on the client icon in your system tray and select 'Synchronize Now' and you should be back in sync.

Changing IP addresses  -
I changed the IP address block that the Sync2it.com and BookmarkSync.com servers use. If you are having trouble connecting to the server, please verify that when you ping sync2it.com it resolves to 72.19.185.47 and bookmarksync.com resolves to 72.19.185.44, if this is not the case, your DNS host may not have updated their IP addresses yet. You can manually insert an entry in your 'hosts' file to fix the DNS trouble until it is updated locally.

If you are still having trouble connecting, please let me know at 'admin at sync2it.com' and I'll continue working on the issue for you.

Maintenance Complete  -
I found that a primary index file was degrading over the past three days. I noticed it yesterday morning and started rebuilding the database, a process that takes about 20 hours now as we have about 20 million user bookmarks stored and the database is about 15 gigabytes in size. The rebuild completed this morning and the server is back online.

I've you've had any lost bookmarks, please visit http://www.sync2it.com/bms/undelete.php to restore any deleted bookmarks.

The current client also tries to keep a running copy of your bookmark backups in this folder. C:\Program Files\BookmarkSync\Backups.

Lastly, you can right-click on the SyncIT icon in your system tray and select "Tools->Backup Bookmarks" to store a copy of your bookmarks offline. If you don't have a current copy of your bookmarks in a safe location, you may wish to do that now.

Thanks for using Sync2It!

3.0 Client Development  -
I'm beginning development of the 3.0 client today with expectations of supporting Firefox 3.x and Google Chrome. Updates will be posted here regularly as well as to Twitter and Facebook.

6/24/2010 - Update - I've got Firefox version 3.6.4 sucessfully synchronizing with the new client! I've got a few things to tidy up but hopefully next week I can release a beta version.

Maintenance Notice  -
7/13/09 - Maintenance Complete. BookmarkSync.com is running on it's own dedicated server. Sync2It.com to follow next week. I've got a few issues to tend to with BookmarkSync over the next week.

Update: 1:56 PM MDT - I'm posting more frequent updates on twitter. Please visit those pages for up to date progress information.

http://twitter.com/bookmarksync
&
http://twitter.com/syncit

I will be moving both the Sync2It.com and BookmarkSync.com primary databases to a new server today and tomorrow. This will require the disabling of any new accounts and cessation of bookmark synchronization while the databases are moved and their integrity checked.

Beginning at 9:00 AM this morning, I will be putting both sites in maintenance mode. Then I will be running integrity checks on the databases. I expect this process to last through the evening Friday and be completed tomorrow. Barring any difficulties, you should again be able to synchronize on the newer and faster server by tomorrow afternoon.

Maintenance Complete  -
The server rack has been moved to its new location and the servers are up and running! It'll take about 30 minutes to get everyone sync'd again and until then, server loads will be a bit high. Thanks for your patience.

Site Maintenance  -
On Saturday, June 6th, 2009 Sync2It and BookmarkSync will be offline for a hardware transfer to new facilities. I am physically moving the servers to new facilities which will enable me to take care of some sorely needed upgrades to the current client software.

I anticipate that the sites will be down from 8:00AM until 12:00PM but depending on the ease the move, we may be back up sooner than that.

Thank you for your patience. Regular updates will be posted on the Twitter accounts.

Sync2It Downtime  -
The Sync2It server apache service stopped about 4:30am yesterday and failed to restart automatically. Thinking my cell phone's battery was low, my wife turned it off so our sleep wouldn't be bothered. However, the beeps she was hearing was our off-site monitoring service sending alerts to my cell phone that the server was down. I found the problem after trying to login about 11:30am and restarted the apache service which corrected the issue.

I apologize for the downtime and have trained my staff (wife) thoroughly.

BookmarkSync failed over to the backup server correctly so this website would have been available during the outage.

 -
I am moving both BookmarkSync.com and Sync2It.com to their own dedicated servers. This will bring my server count to 5 required to operate the BookmarkSync network. BookmarkSync.com will be first to be transferred and it should be transparent to most users.

I am intending on doing the transfer next Saturday (February 7th), at about 10am. While the transfer itself should be transparent, there will be a few hours where your client will not transfer links to the server though it will continue to operate normally. After I move the current database tables to the new server, there will be about 3 hours required to re-index the tables after which all should return to normal.

This new server will be the primary server for BookmarkSync.com and I will operate the current server as a backup server through an automatic DNS failover mechanism to minimize future downtime.

I will be moving Sync2It.com to a new server later this month.

Internet Explorer 8  -
I just confirmed that the current BookmarkSync client supports IE 8 Beta 2. It looks like Microsoft, contrary to the rather haphazard Firefox folks have kept their bookmark structures compatible. I appreciate that. Still working on Firefox 3 support, the documentation for Firefox bookmarks API is incomplete making progress slow.

Firefox 3 Support  -
The current version of the BookmarkSync client doesn't support Firefox 3.

While I had hoped to have a fix available quickly, as always, it's turning out to be a bit more complex. Firefox not only modified their basic storage method, but they also modified their legacy 'bookmarks.html' file format. This has necessitated re-writing a good portion of the Firefox Browser class within the BookmarkSync client. I'm working on it daily and expect to have a solution soon.

Thanks for your patience.

Maintenance Update  -
It looks like the database has again settled down and is running normally. I suspect that I made an error in setting up the re-indexing that caused several clients to continue to sync with the backup database causing a number of links to be registered as expired.

One of the new features I've included in the next release is an bookmarks backup function that will make periodic backups of your favorites on the local machine.

Important Update!  -
Over the past week, I had begun to notice some degradation in the primary Sync2It database and because of this concern; I decided to rebuild the main database indexes. This operation is performed approximately every 6 months, removing deleted links and re-indexing the database and it normally takes about 12-15 hours due to the large size of the databases involved. Because of the extended down time required, I generally revert to a previous backup database to run the website on while the primary database is rebuilt. I also turn off client synchronization during this event so that your client won’t send new link changes to the secondary database. These changes are incorporated when the main database is brought back online, which occurred about 7am Sunday morning.

Because of this unplanned maintenance event, you may have experienced some problems with your links that should have been resolved by now but in case you are still having trouble, here are a few things that you can do to help alleviate the problem.

If you notice any bookmarks missing that you don’t remember deleting or if for some reason your bookmarks may have all been expired, please visit http://www.sync2it.com/bms/undelete.php and undelete any deleted bookmarks to restore them to active status. You can simply click on the “Undelete All” button to restore all expired links.

I'm not sure why this occurred this time, but I'm checking into it now and hope to have everything back to normal very soon. I'm trying to determine if the problem was a corrupt index that is now fixed and will be back to normal if you undelete your bookmarks or if the problem is continuing to cause problems and I need to take the database down again and attempt another rebuild with a different set of tools. Right now I'm receiving a good number of emails bringing this to my attention and I'm trying to reply to as many as possible but please bear with me as I cannot answer all of the email I'm receiving about this issue.

Update: 6:15 PM - Monday (3/31) - My suspicions are that a temporary problem caused a number of users to experience this problem but that the database is stable now and simply 'undeleting' your bookmarks will set everything right again. If you are unable to undelete your bookmarks, please let me know at 'admin [at] sync2it.com.

Thank you for you understanding.

Blogs back!  -
The Sync2It blog is back up and running now. I had a bit of a problem with the Wordpress install over at bookmarksync.com so I'll just do all of the blogging for both sites here for now.

BookmarkSync vs. del.icio.us - Somethings's rotten in Sunnyvale  -
I've just finished compiling comparison database statistics for BookmarkSync and del.icio.us utilizing a number of various URL's and the early results are startling.

Something is terribly wrong with del.icio.us's bookmark counts and their data distrubutions are highly skewed.

Now, I'm really rooting for our friends at Yahoo and hope they'll give Google a run for their money, but if these numbers hold up, del.icio.us is going to leave a rotten taste in their mouth.

Thumbnail Images  -
I'm adding additional features to Susie that is allowing her to create site thumbnail images while she is link checking. Through this process, I've found a few things to improve in the search engine, a couple of new indexes were added or modified such that the clustering engine is much, much faster now. Here is an example:

If you have any suggestions as to how these images might be used in other ways, please send me your ideas.

Rebuilding Indexes  -
I'm rebuilding the primary index on the clustering database. This db is used for looking up releationships between bookmarks and their clusters and may cause any searches on the bookmark search engine to abort. This will likely take a couple of hours today. For the time being, we'll be running on the backup zheh database.
