New Client Version. [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:54:23 AMFinally! I've updated the Windows client software to support Firefox 3.x and Opera 10.x. I'm working on Chrome support now and hopefully will have it available in a couple of weeks. Although this version of the client appears to be very stable and it's the version that I'm personally using now, please make sure to backup your bookmarks before you install this latest version.
Here is a link: http://www.sync2it.com/download/beta.php
Any feedback that you can provide would be appreciated.
Changing IP addresses [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:51:33 PMI changed the IP address block that the Sync2it.com and BookmarkSync.com servers use. If you are having trouble connecting to the server, please verify that when you ping sync2it.com it resolves to 18.104.22.168 and bookmarksync.com resolves to 22.214.171.124, if this is not the case, your DNS host may not have updated their IP addresses yet. You can manually insert an entry in your 'hosts' file to fix the DNS trouble until it is updated locally.
If you are still having trouble connecting, please let me know at 'admin at sync2it.com' and I'll continue working on the issue for you.
3.0 Client Development [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:52:18 AMI'm beginning development of the 3.0 client today with expectations of supporting Firefox 3.x and Google Chrome. Updates will be posted here regularly as well as to Twitter and Facebook.
6/24/2010 - Update - I've got Firefox version 3.6.4 sucessfully synchronizing with the new client! I've got a few things to tidy up but hopefully next week I can release a beta version.
Maintenance Notice [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:37:58 AM7/13/09 - Maintenance Complete. BookmarkSync.com is running on it's own dedicated server. Sync2It.com to follow next week. I've got a few issues to tend to with BookmarkSync over the next week.
Update: 1:56 PM MDT - I'm posting more frequent updates on twitter. Please visit those pages for up to date progress information.
I will be moving both the Sync2It.com and BookmarkSync.com primary databases to a new server today and tomorrow. This will require the disabling of any new accounts and cessation of bookmark synchronization while the databases are moved and their integrity checked.
Beginning at 9:00 AM this morning, I will be putting both sites in maintenance mode. Then I will be running integrity checks on the databases. I expect this process to last through the evening Friday and be completed tomorrow. Barring any difficulties, you should again be able to synchronize on the newer and faster server by tomorrow afternoon.
Site Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:48:58 PMOn Saturday, June 6th, 2009 Sync2It and BookmarkSync will be offline for a hardware transfer to new facilities. I am physically moving the servers to new facilities which will enable me to take care of some sorely needed upgrades to the current client software.
I anticipate that the sites will be down from 8:00AM until 12:00PM but depending on the ease the move, we may be back up sooner than that.
Thank you for your patience. Regular updates will be posted on the Twitter accounts.
Sync2It Downtime [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:52:20 AMThe Sync2It server apache service stopped about 4:30am yesterday and failed to restart automatically. Thinking my cell phone's battery was low, my wife turned it off so our sleep wouldn't be bothered. However, the beeps she was hearing was our off-site monitoring service sending alerts to my cell phone that the server was down. I found the problem after trying to login about 11:30am and restarted the apache service which corrected the issue.
I apologize for the downtime and have trained my staff (wife) thoroughly.
BookmarkSync failed over to the backup server correctly so this website would have been available during the outage.
Internet Explorer 8 [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:05:43 AMI just confirmed that the current BookmarkSync client supports IE 8 Beta 2. It looks like Microsoft, contrary to the rather haphazard Firefox folks have kept their bookmark structures compatible. I appreciate that. Still working on Firefox 3 support, the documentation for Firefox bookmarks API is incomplete making progress slow.
Maintenance Update [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:04:48 AMIt looks like the database has again settled down and is running normally. I suspect that I made an error in setting up the re-indexing that caused several clients to continue to sync with the backup database causing a number of links to be registered as expired.
One of the new features I've included in the next release is an bookmarks backup function that will make periodic backups of your favorites on the local machine.
BookmarkSync Toolbar Update [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 08:35:01 AMI've noticed some issues with the current toolbar regarding refreshing the current weather if you have that add-in enabled. I'm trying to determine the cause of the problem and will release an updated toolbar as soon as it is available.
After digging a bit, it looks like the weather plug-in was causing some problems. So here is an updated toolbar that ships without the weather plug-in or popup blocker installed.
BookmarkSync 2.0 [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:51:53 AMThe website is available and mostly operational at www.bookmarksync.com . The new beta client has server selection settings that allow subscribers to point to either server, or even your own server with optional server side code. (Available soon). Three more languages will be added to the client for the next production release (Dutch, French & Norwegian) as well as numerous small enhancements and bug fixes will be added.
I'm still working on the PasswordSync application and should have it ready for beta release in about 4 weeks. This will be a private key enabled credentials vault that will be kept current across computers while significantly enhancing your overall password security and confidence.
Translators needed [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:18:51 AMWould you like a version of the new client in your own language? How about translating it and getting a free subscription to boot! Details are on the beta download page along with a spreadsheet of the current client strings in many languages. Add yours and send it back and I'll give you a free subscription for the life of the service.
Maintenance Complete [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 03:53:42 PMThe unscheduled rebuilding of the database is completed. Client synchronization has been restored and the live database is back online.
Thank you for your understanding.
Network Outage [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:05:02 PMToday, as well as last Monday, we suffered a network connectivity issue that limited the site access for about 3 hours. The trouble was traced to a some router loading issues related to what the rather tired network technician described as 'growing pains' after their company purchased another local network provider in our area. I apologize and hope to have this addressed soon. If this option is not going to work, we will move to another co-location facility that will provide better connectivity. Thanks for your understanding.
Synchronization Restored [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 04:59:29 PMI've modified the tables and rebuilt the indexes for both the links and bookmarks tables. There were over 12 million rows that needed to be reindexed so it took several hours. I've tested synchronization with my 5000 bookmarks and some other test suites, please let me know if you seen any irregularities over the next few days. Hopefully, the table crashing problem will have also been taken care of.
Thanks for your patience.
Character Set Encoding [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:16:02 AMClient uploads are disabled for the moment. I'm rebuilding certain database indexes to use UTF8 character encoding. This is a new capability in MySQL 4.1 that I probably should have been implemented a few months ago. BookmarkSync was never designed to be multi-lingual and the support was minimal at best, after these upgrades (and some code changes to the server), it should do a better job of it.
I anticipate getting the databases tables modified today, though there are some concerns. If everything goes well, the site should be back to normal soon.
Here is a good technical reference for selecting character sets in MySQL 4.1 http://www.samspublishing.com/articles/article.asp?p=377068&seqNum=3&rl=1
15:28 MDT - I've found a number of duplicate primary keys in the links table, probably caused by the file corruption and resultant kernal panics that the previous server experienced during May-June of '06. This should help clean up some of the problems a few of you were experiencing with corrupt links.
Database Issues [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:41:18 AMGosh I love upgrading.... We've been on MySQL 3.23 since 2003. I felt that with the server move, it would be appropriate to upgrade to the next stable version of PHP and MySQL. I chose PHP 5 and MySQL 4.1 for various reasons. Well, it seems that with the addition of characterset collation, we have an issue with tables hanging. Either the ZHEH primary table or Sync2It's links table locks now and then. I suspect this has to do with unicode characters being entered into the default table collation. I'm in the process of researching the issue and hope to have it solved as soon as possible.
Here is a link to some of the issues that I'm dealing with:
The downside to this is that there will likely be some additional maintenance time required to rebuild the full-text indexes in both databases after changing the default table collation to UTF8.
Important Note! - While this conversion is taking place, client synchronization is turned off. If I allow changes while we are operating on the backup database, they will be lost when we switch back. For now, any changes that you make to your favorites will be cached locally and updated when the maintenance is complete. Thank you for your understanding.
I'll keep you updated.
Maintenance Complete [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:58:12 PMAll of the significant tables have been re-indexed and your bookmarks should now be in synchronization. Please let me know if you notice any discrepancies.
Thank you for your patience. This year I hope to add an addition database server and spare server so that the BookmarkSync service can become very dependable.
Database Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:59:34 AM
Update - 09:50 Friday, 7/28/06
Continuing to rebuild indexes on the primary database tables. There are about 20 million rows that need to be reindexed and that will take some time. During this process, changes made to your favorites will not be uploaded to the server. Your changes will be synchronized when the live database comes back online. For now, the site is operating with the backup database that is valid up till 9:30AM yesterday morning. Everything should be restored to normal sometime later today.
The B2 blog is back up and running now. Just some minor code changes required.
On the other hand, the change from MySQL 3.2.3 to MySQL 4.1.20 has had a couple issues associated with it. Today, I discovered a couple of tables in the ZHEH and Sync2It databases that needed to have their indexes rebuilt. This is a significant issue that needs to be taken care of. It is about 40% complete and will likely take until about 8PM this evening (local Denver time).
On the other hand, and this should have probably been done last year. (but I didn't think of it) I've created a secondary database that will allow the Sync2It site to operate normally while system maintenance is underway. Except for the modification of bookmarks, you will be able to view your bookmarks online and use the system as if nothing was going on. Of course, any changes made to your bookmarks while the database is running in maintenance mode will be lost when reverting to the regular database. Still, I think this is an improvement over just not being able to use the site.
Thank you for your understanding.
On the new server [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:01:02 PMSync2It is back up. Running on the new RAID 5 SCSI box. I plan to add another soon. I've tested the system with my bookmarks and collections. The client seems to be synchronizing just fine. It will take a bit for everyone to get re-synchronized and for the local indexes to be built which will speed up the system considerably.
Please let me know if you notice anything unusual, it's been a long day and I'm going to get some rest. See you all in the morning.
Moving to a new server [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 08:43:59 AMSaturday, 10:51AM MDT - Denver
I'm in the process of moving to a new server, currently I'm transferring disk images of the site and databases. I've halted any modifications while this process is going on. I anticipate a couple of hours to move everything and test the new server. Hopefully everything will transition smoothly and we'll be up on the faster server soon.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Internationalization [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 12:50:20 PMI've added a character set provision into your user profiles. If your bookmarks are not rendered properly on the website, you should set your characterset to a value appropriate to your location.
It is an interesting problem to internationalize BookmarkSync. A user's bookmarks can come from anywhere and in any language. Users may be viewing their own links or links provided by a different user in a completly different language. This involves some database gymanstics in order to determine the proper character set to render the page to the browser.
If you see any glitches, please let me know.
Over 4 million unique URL's! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:34:04 AMWe've added over 1,000,000 new & unique URL's in the last 7 months bringing the database up to over 4 million unique web pages bookmarked by our users. There are also now over 12 million individual bookmarks being synchronized by our community.
Last year, I argued DMOZ's index was artificially inflated and largly polluted by IMDB pages, AOL homepages and other bulk dumps of pre-cataloged sites from their relationship with AOL and Netscape. I noticed today that the total number of sites indexed has declined to pre-2004 levels. Have they changed the way their numbers are reported or have they trimmed the bloated index?
DMOZ - over 4 million sites - 73,118 editors - over 590,000 categories
ZHEH - over 4 million sites - 1 editor - over 33,000 categories.
Maintenance Complete [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:26:32 AMDatabase maintenance is complete and was routine. Thanks for your patience.
Routine Database Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:52:35 PMIt's that time again, time to optimize the database and remove old deleted bookmarks from the server. Beginning at 9:00 am Saturday, Sync2It will be offline for routine database maintenance. This should take about 6 hours to complete and all changes made to your bookmarks will be synchronized when the system comes back up. I'll be placing the server into maintenance mode which will leave your client in it's normal state so it's likely that the maintenance will be transparent to most users. You'll only notice if you try to access your bookmarks from the website.
Update - 1:33 PM , Denver, CO
I was a bit late getting optimization started this morning, one of our horses had a colt last night and he's not doing well this morning. We had to have a vet out to treat him, it's looking like he may not live through the week. Anyway, after taking care of all that this morning, I put the database into maintenance mode and we are in the process of removing old records and optimizing the smaller tables. Expected time of completion is about 9PM. Subscriptions will be updated then. Thank you for your understanding.
Update - 7:05 PM , Denver, CO
I haven't removed deleted bookmarks for the database in several months and with over 4 million bookmarks in the database, this is taking a bit longer than expected. Things are still on track but it may be the morning before synchronization can resume. On a sad note, I buried the colt a couple of hours ago.
Update - 5/28/06 5:50 AM , Denver, CO>
Began optimization of the link table, barring any additional delays, everything should be back online in a few hours.
Update - 5/28/06 7:48 AM , Denver, CO>
Optimization is about 40% complete.
Outgoing Email interruption [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:28:43 AMI'm visiting family in California right now and I'm able to receive email but my outgoing mail is being rejected. If you send me an email, I'm receiving it ok, and you should see an answer in that your service will be activated, but I will likely be unable to reply for the next couple of days. Thanks for your understanding.
Routine Database Maintenance Underway [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:40:27 PMI've begun a session of routine table maintenance on the Sync2It database.
20:38 MST - All of the minor tables have been optimized successfully, I'm currently rebuilding the 'links' table index which is the largest table currently at 3.5 gig and 13 million rows. This normally takes a few hours to complete. Expect normal Sync2It operation to resume in about 3 hours.
23:59 MST - I've finished up optimizing the primary ZHEH databases and much of the routine maintenance related to the Sync2It database indexes. It looks like everything will be completed about 3 AM local Denver, CO time.
Sync2It will again be available in about 6 hours from now. I apologize for the delay and appreciate your patience. All links will be synchronized when the maintenance is completed in a few hours.
06:51 MST The synchronization service is now back online. Everything went normally.
BookmarkSync Toolbar [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:33:14 AMI am rebuilding the indexes on zheh.com which is where the BookmarkSync Toolbar draws it's information for the penetration ratio display. I've disabled the display of the penetration ratio on the toolbar until this process is complete, which should take a few hours.
Database Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:29:35 AM0930 MST - I've begun some very necessary table maintenance on the Sync2It primary database. I apologize for the mid-week maintenance but I didn't think it wise to wait. The service will be unavailable for synchronization or new user accounts for a few hours this morning, but barring any problems, everything should be back to normal soon.
I have set the server into maintenance mode meaning the client will appear to sync, but the server merely acknowledges the connection and disconnects. Any changes made to your bookmarks will not be uploaded to the server until maintenance is complete, then all the cached changes will be synchronized as usual.
0958 MST - All of the minor tables have been optimized successfully, I'm currently rebuilding the 'links' table index which is the largest table currently at 2.8 gig and 10 million rows. This normally takes a few hours to complete.
1325 MST - The 'link' table index rebuild is complete, I've started rebuilding the 'bookmarks' table.
1344 MST - The 'bookmarks' table index rebuild is complete, I'm backing up the databases and bringing up the service in about 15 minutes.
1413 MST - Everything's backed up and Sync2It is back online. I've verified everything looks ok and have enabled general client synchronization with the server. A few users were experiencing a loss of synchronization or various errors when trying to view their bookmarks online. I've checked a couple of these accounts and they look fine now, please let me know if you notice any irregularities.
Merry Christmas All!
Database Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:40:49 PMI am having trouble with one of the database indexes on the main links table and am probably going to have to take the server down to rebuild the index before Saturday's scheduled maintenance.
I apologize for the inconvenience. I suspect that I'll be starting this about 12:00 pm tomorrow instead of Saturday. I'll keep you posted via this news page and via the website.
eTrust Pest Patrol and "Buddy Spy" [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:47:34 PMComputer Associates eTrust Pest Patrol is reporting that the latest Sync2It client software contains "Buddy Spy 2.2". This is erroneous and I’ve contacted their technical support with an urgent request to ask that they correct their software. Buddy Spy is a completely unrelated piece of software.
I assure you, Sync2It’s BookmarkSync is in no way related to “Buddy Spy” and doesn’t provide any of the functionality that this program does. BookmarkSync is a completly open-source software solution that has been available for nearly 7 years and is used by thousands of computer professionals. Your privacy is very important to me I will have a solution to this as soon as possible.
If you are a customer of "eTrust Pest Patrol" and BookmarkSync, you may want to write them also as many customers are more likely to get a response than just one letter from me.
Thank you for your trust and continued support.
Sync2It Stats Update [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:30:02 AMSync2It has now registered over 12,000 users and is hosting over 8 million personal bookmarks. We have over 3 million unique urls indexed and available for search. Over the last year, the website was featured in several publications including PC World and the BBC television program, "Click-Online". In a new strategic alliance, BookmarkSync has been included in FirstStop WebSearch's Desktop Meta-Search Engine, allowing users of that software to search for social bookmarks from our site as well as several others. The mobile interface was enhanced allowing users to view and use all of their favorites from a PDA or other mobile device and RSS 2.0 feeds have been added to all bookmark display pages, sitewide.
Lastly, automatic bookmark clustering and automatic bookmark searching has been implemented in a beta format. These tools are slated for expansion over the coming year to greatly improve the usability and popularity of these features.
It's been a fun year so far, thank you all for your continued support! Our re-subscription rate continues to be over 90% so the business model is proving to be effective and BookmarkSync will be able to faithfully continue in service for the foreseeable future.

Scheduled Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:23:04 AMI will be performing a software upgrade on our firewall on 8/30/2005 at 2:00am central time. This will cause a short outage for Sync2It users while this device is upgraded.
Update: It looks like the firewall maintenance may have caused some clients not to be able to automatically reconnect. I noticed about a 100 clients dropped offline after the event and have not yet reconnected. If your Sync2It client is not giving you the normal blue over purple arrows, you might try restarting your system. -JD-
Over 6 Million Bookmarks Stored! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:48:52 PMAs of last month, Sync2It is now storing more than 6 million individual bookmarks pointing to more than 2.5 million unique webpages. More Links mean more clusters and Sync2It's Automatic clustering using bookmark folders allows Sync2It to gather over twice as many bookmarks in the same amount of time as those other social sites that rely on 'Tags' for their taxonomy. Our cluster names also more accurately reflect users intent as several users must choose the same tag for the webpage before that page is counted to be a member of a cluster.
BookmarkSync Clustering is taking social bookmarking to the next level, effortlessly!
Clustering and Free Access [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:02:07 AMWhen your starving, even a hamburger is 'delicious'
I am so convinced that Sync2It is a better choice for social bookmarking, that I'm opening up the service to all web users for free. That's right, upload and interact with tens of thousands of users and millions of bookmarks for free.
Starting right now, you may create a user account and start adding links to your favorites using the Quick-Add feature or the new BookmarkSync Toolbar. Browse BookmarkSync clusters to find new links and add them to your account.
Feel free to use the client side application to automatically synchronize with the server, but you don't have to. Your access to the server and your stored bookmarks will remain unrestricted. We will still have a premium service in place. I am keeping the subscription plan as is for access to the server longer than the 90 day free trial period, and will likely reduce the free trial time down to 30 days after I've had time to evaluate the impact of opening up the service.
BookmarkSync has always had the power to compete with other popular social bookmark managers, but I think BookmarkSync does it better, because it does it without changing the way you use the web.
Note: Since we still have to pay for the bandwidth and server, using the client to synchronize more than 100 bookmarks longer than the 90 free trial period still requires a small annual subscription. You can also help support Sync2It by using the client fast-links to shop at Amazon.com and others. Thanks!
Bookmark Details [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:07:52 PMI've added a bookmark preview page that may be accessed by left-clicking on any little yellow or blue bookmark () in front of any of your bookmark links or collections.
Here is an Example
Update: You now have a way to expire and restore bookmarks via the bookmark detail page. You can also directly add new bookmarks to your own collection from this page.
Soon, I will have a way to tag, rate and comment on websites and display a selection of interrelated bookmarks by keywords and tags.
Menu Changes [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:45:14 PMIn order to make way for Sync2It's new Social Bookmarking Features, I'm going to remove the navigation button for Sync2It's Project and replace it with Sync2It Social. The project code never attracted the sort of involvement that I had hoped and though it was visited by many, few opted to use it's features. Those of you that are using Sync2It's project will still be able to for the time being. Please let me know if you would like me to keep the code available, otherwise I intend to take it offline in the next month or so.
Normal Operation Restored [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 12:38:09 PMLooks like the system is running normally now. I'll need to get your feedback to see if this has resolved your syncing issues.
Please let me know at email@example.com
I've tested syncing across the board and all of it seems to be working properly using my test and personal accounts. I've added links from one PC running IE and synchronized across the server with my laptop running IE as well as adding links from the mobile interface at http://www.sync2it.com/mobile.
Note: If you are running Firefox and are still having trouble syncing, please try version 1.7.1 to see if this resolves the issue.
Cautiously Optimistic... [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:33:44 AMI've completed the repair of the links table, and ran a check table on it after the repair reported successful. Both processes completed normally with the table looking to be in good shape. I performed an insert using data from on of my failed SQL inserts and it worked as it should so I brought the database back online. I added another website to my favorites through the normal Sync2It process and it worked as it should, the server accepted the bookmark and propagated it to my other computers as it should.
I'm currently in the process of verifying proper operation of all synchronization services. If you notice something that is now working correctly, where it hasn't been working over the past couple of days, please let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Important Notice!! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:37:38 AMThere appears to be a problem with database that apparently has carried forward from last Sunday's routine maintenance. Bookmarks are not being synchronized with the server. Upon closer investigation, this appears to be effecting all users of Sync2It.com, including myself. I believe that I have it tracked down to an errant index on a single table within the database and I will begin the process of rebuilding the datatable index when I have confirmed what the trouble is.
Please look for updates on this page rather than writing me at this point. Thank you to all of you that have notified me of the problem. Let me assure you that I am working on it diligently to get the problem corrected.
Update - 13:14 , Began the repair process on the errant table. This will likely take about 1/2 hour to complete. If I need to totally rebuild the index, it will take several hours to complete.
System Running Normally [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:18:20 PMEverything is back online and running normally
System Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:26:03 AMUpdate 2:43PM - I'm having to rebuild an index on the primary Sync2It database. It's a rather large index (several million rows) so it's going to take a few hours to rebuild. Your links are safe and normal updates will commence as the database is placed back online later today.
I've placed the Sync2It client communications module into maintenance mode which means that your client will behave just as if it's syncing normally, but updates to the server will be cached on your machine until the server is returned online.
This is so transparent that you may not even notice that Sync2It is being worked on unless you visit the website.
Thank you for your understanding.
System database maintenance in progress, should have the site and syncing back up soon. Please check here for notices or updates as we progress.
SyncIT and BookmarkSync [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:40:44 PMMichael Berneis has graciously allowed me to assume the rights to both the BookmarkSync.com and SyncIT.com domains. This action keeps the original domains paired with the original bookmarksync project and allows SyncIT to live on as a self-supporting entity.
As a subscription based service, BookmarkSync can survive into the forseeable future. Even though the open-source participation is low at this point, our user base is continuing to grow at a steady and healthy pace. If you are using one of those other free bookmarksync servers, may I ask that you consider supporting the SyncIT, Sync2IT and BookmarkSync project so I can continue to keep the software current? You may get free syncing for a year or two at another site, but at what cost over the long run? By supporting BookmarkSync through SyncIT and Sync2It, I will continue to have the resources to improve the MAC and PC clients, and hopefully add a linux client later this year.
Thank you for your support!

Travel Update [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:03:12 PMA fascinating 4300 mile west coast adventure to 9 different states is coming to a close. I've been keeping in touch via hotel high-speed hotspots and unprotected wireless routers all across the western United States. I will be arriving back in Colorado tomorrow evening so the site should be getting it's normal maintenance and communication back up to speed. If for some reason I've missed your email over the past three weeks, please write me again and I'll take care of it.
Thank you for your patience.
Update 5/3/2005 [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:46:32 PMThose of you that have sent email to me over the past few days, please forgive me, I'm traveling right now and having some trouble replying to email through my mail server while on the road. I've got a queue of 25 messages sitting in my outbox and hopefully I'll get to a server that will allow me to send it shortly.
Today it's May 3rd and I expect to be back in the office by the 15th of May, 2005.
Thanks for your understanding.

Sync2It for Mac OS X [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 05:20:45 AMSync2It for Mac OS X (10.3 and above) is available for download. This product restores one of the original great features of BookmarkSync. Now you can keep both your PC favorites and Mac favorites synchronized across both operating systems. This current release supports both the IE and Safari browsers.
System Restored [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 09:39:31 AMSync2It has been restored to normal operation. If your client is still not syncing, please make sure that you are using the latest version of the client software. If you are using an internet privacy tool such as "Webwasher", and your client isn't syncing, please contact me and I'll manually take care of it. If you are running the latest version and still cannot synchronize, please let me know and I'll help you work through the issues.
For security purposes, I've decided to limit connections to the Sync2It database to well-known clients only that originate from our servers. If your client has been modified in any way, it will probably not connect any longer.
Thanks for your understanding.
Modified item 1, Description of service changed to reflect the recent changes to our subscription policy. Sync2It now allows free syncing for users with less than 50 bookmarks.
Modified item 2, Notification of changes to this policy will be published by email or this news page rather than email and this news page. This reflects the general desire of the web community to reduce the number of unnecessary emails being sent.
Modified item 3, Display bug causing 'Your e-mail address' not to be displayed properly
Updated item 5, Security. Added reference to the secure logins now available while using the website.
Several cosmetic and formatting changes.
[News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:23:40 PMJust a quick update:
The Mac project is on schedule, we should have working beta copy available in a few weeks.
I had an interesting discussion with a DMOZ editor over at WebProWorld regarding ZHEH and DMOZ in general. If you are interested in DMOZ listings, this is an interesting exchange http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?p=197221#197221
I have made the Sync2It search engine available to the general public at http://www.zheh.com. I think we could be on the cutting edge of a new concept in search. Please let me know what you think
Mac client for OSX project is underway! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:03:15 AMWe are in the process of creating the new Mac Client and I need your input.
If you are interested in the Mac program specifications, screen shots, or would like to make some comments on the design, please write me. Here is the design document. I would love to hear some feedback before we start coding. Pre-release versions will be available for anyone that would like to be a beta tester, again, please write me at email@example.com with your comments.
Firewall Upgrade [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:22:51 AMI upgraded the server firewall this weekend so there was a short outage (about 30 minutes). Everything appears to be back up and running normally. If you are having any issues connecting, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Server Upgrade Complete! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:19:49 AMAfter nearly 36 hours, my upstream DNS finally updated their database and I too can connect to Sync2It.com at 126.96.36.199. It looks like nearly everyone is now syncing on the new server. Server loads are WAY down and things work much snapper now. The Sync2It Search Engine works well too, with many test searches completing in under 1 second. Still, some searches are taking several seconds. I plan on doubling the Server memory which should take care of the problem.
Thank you all for your patience over the weekend. Moving a large MySQL database is a bit time consuming, but we should be set for at lease another year or two on this box.
Please let me know if you are having difficulites with syncing. email@example.com
The new server is up and running! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:41:13 PMThe new server is up and running. If you ping sync2it.com, you should see the IP address as 188.8.131.52, if you are having any trouble syncing, double check this first. The old server is running but I have the client syncing turned off on that machine.
As you might be aware, I planned this server move all week and although it's gone very soothly so far technically, I had a terrible day just the same. At noon today, my wife informed me that one of our calves was looking very sick. We raise a few holstein bull calves and #22 bloated and went down before we found him this afternoon. As some of you may be aware, there are some things you can do to try to help but they must be done quickly otherwise the calf will suffocate. A rancher friend of mine came over and we tried everything we could, but he still died about 3 this afternoon.
Anyway, that's been my day. I hope yours has been better. Please let me know if you have any troubles syncing to the new server. I've moved all of my mail accounts as too so replying may take me a day or two.
Thanks for your support!
Server Upgrade Coming Soon! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 08:57:12 PMI have just purchased a dual processor Super Xeon server to host Sync2It. Without listing all the stats, let me say that this will greatly improve the responsiveness of both the website and client sync software. (Many thanks to Joe at BookmarkSink.com for the tip and the great server pricing!) This server is due to come online in the next day or so, and I hope to get the website transferred over by week's end. The database is another story as it has grown fairly large. I will be doing the transfer toward the end of next week so the server will likely be unavailable for syncing for a few hours. The good news is that this should be the last transfer for the next couple of years because this server is quite capable of handling our anticipated load. Nevertheless, as I vowed when I first started this, I will do my best to keep Sync2It the best BookmarkSync service available!
We completed the purchase of BookmarkSink.com and welcome all of our new BookmarkSink users. Since BookmarkSink was free, and since our new server finally has the power to handle it, I want to offer a free hosting option for those users with minimal bookmarks that only need a server to sync to. Toward that end, I've resurrected the concept of the BookmarkSync mini-banner. This tiny banner is incorporated into the bookmark menu you see when you left-click on the Sync2It icon in your system tray. When you navigate through the banner to the store, Sync2It will get a small commission for any purchases that you make. I understand that some folks don't want to purchase a subscription, but perhaps I can ask you to use our links for any online shopping that you do. That way you'll still be helping to support the BookmarkSync project and helping to keep Sync2It online!
You will notice a new section in your user 'Profile' section. At the bottom of the page there are a couple of new checkboxes. If you are a subscriber, you now have the ability to deselect the mini-banners and effectively eliminate them from appearing on your Sync2It taskbar icon. (We hope that even our subscribers will use the mini-banners, but understand that they may not want to and we sure want to be as supportive as possible for those who are keeping Sync2It online!)
We should be completing the Dutch and German translations of the website soon and....we are in the process of writing a new Mac client for OSX! Stay tuned for details...
It's been a good year. The server has been reliable and we have grown as expected. Hopefully, next year will bring even more faithful users to this great utility known as 'BookmarkSync'.
Thank you all and Happy New Year!
Monthly DB Maintenance [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 06:01:15 AMI performed our normal monthly database maintenance last evening. Trimmed 200,000+ old and expired links from the database. This process takes a couple of hours and syncing needs to be disabled. The server is placed into a standby mode during this time where it will acknowledge client requests for updated bookmarks, but it doesn't actually allow any bookmark changes while maintenance is in progress. When the database is brought back online, all bookmark changes are processed as usual. I normally perform this type of maintenance monthly during a weekend as these are our slower periods.
I added a couple of new graphical statistics pages to the site. One graph is showing the number of average users/hour connected to the server, and the number of users modifying bookmarks/day. The second graph shows the number of users connected to the server in a 24 hour period.
New Version 1.7.1 [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:13:42 PMI've been testing version 1.7.1 of the client over the past several days. Please feel free to download it and give it a go. Please let me know if you have any trouble. I welcome all comments.
FireFox 1.0 Update [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 09:15:51 PMI reverted back to version 1.6.5, version 1.6.7 just didn't work very well at all. I'm sorry I released it so quickly.
On the other hand, I'm making good progress with version 1.7, here is what's done so far and what is remaining.
* Now Syncs correctly with Firefox 1.0 (See Note below)
* Added user selectable browser selection in the "Settings" property list.
* Corrected bug causing multiple "Bookmarks Toolbar Folders" to be created.
(BTW, this is related to a known bug in FirefoxF1.0
* Added several new Icons to the Synchronizer state machine, to better indicate what the client is doing during the sync process.
* Fixed a bug where DWORD values were incorrectly stored in the Sync2It registry hive when requested by the Server.
* Fixed a bug causing duplicate Sync2It and SyncIT registry keys to be created.
Note: Although the client now sync's properly with Firefox 1.0, there still remains a bug in the sync process that I need to address before issuing this release. If you are able to provide any assistance, it would be appreciated. Firefox stores it's bookmarks in a file called "bookmarks.html" of course. When a change is made in Firefox, it updates this file and the Sync2It client detect's this change through Windows FileChange() event. The client then sends the changes to the server. I have not been able to find out as yet, how Firefox is notified that it's bookmarks.html file has been modified externally. If you have any knowledge about this process, please let me know at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also, although I've fixed the problem with the "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder", the reason for this trouble is that Firefox changed the structure of the link and also added several new attributes for each link, such as the modified date, keywords and icons. The Sync2It client never included these attributes. I'm working on that now and should be able to have them done by next week. Christmas time makes this more difficult of course.
Lastly, I'm in the process of commissioning a new developer to work full-time on a new Mac client for OSX. If you are interested in a Mac client for OSX, could I get you to write me. I will probably have to charge for this client as it will likely cost several thousand dollars to have it written. I was thinking something like 34.95 for the Mac Client with a free years syncing on the server. Again, please let me know what you think at email@example.com
Thank you for your patience and Merry Christmas!
Blog Comments Disabled [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:45:39 PMDue to the overwhelming flood of Spam appearing in our comments, I've disabled comment posting until I get the b2 code modified to preclude spambots using Sync2It's News section. I apologize for the inconvienance.
Welcome Baboo Users! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:39:51 AMWelcome to all of our new Baboo users! We as Sync2It understand the frustration and inconvenience of having yet another BookmarkSync provider close up shop without notice. If you are trying out Sync2It after using one of those other services, let me assure you that Sync2It is fully funded and supported and designed to accomodate all existing and future customers for years to come. When necessary, we simply add additional servers that accomodate the network bandwidth and database storage space necessary to host your bookmarks.
Why choose Sync2It?
Try Sync2It out for free for a full three months and then, if you decide to stay, we ask for a small $9.95 annual subscription to help support the service. We think you'll enjoy the stable and reliable Bookmarksync service.
Mac Client on the Way! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 08:41:20 PMGreat News! I've conversed with the original creator of the SyncIT Mac Client and he has agreed to modify the original code to make it configurable as to the bookmark sync server it will attach to. Naturally, we hope that you'll point yours to Sync2it.com, but either way, this will be great news to all of our multi-OS users. I'll let you know when it's available, and it will also be posted on the Sourceforge project site when it's ready.
This version is for Mac OS9, an OSX version doesn't exist and from what the developer has told me, it's a major rewrite to convert it to OSX. I think if we were to compensate him for his time, he would be willing to do the project. If you are interested in an OSX version of the BookmarkSync Client, and are willing to donate to the project, let me know and we'll put some irons in the fire!
Server Performance Graphs [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:00:58 AMI watch the server's performance of course to track user loads and system performance and keep the system running reliably. For that purpose, I've added several performance metrics graphs to the website and I'm making some of these available for public viewing.
http://www.sync2it.com/stats/server.php is one of these new graphs that indicates the average time required for each of our thousands of users to update their bookmarks and subscriptions. The time is in seconds and averaged for all users of version 1.6.5 of the client software.
The periods of activity showing slower response times are because I'm running the link checking process from this same server and it is a bit of a drag on the db to keep the indexes up to date while adding new websites to the search engine. I'll move this to another server if it becomes too much of a load.
This graph is calculated and recorded each day at midnight.
Server Upgrade Progress [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:21:37 PMUpdate on the Sync2It Server migration of 5-28-2004 - everything working fine, users beginning to reattach to the database. Bookmark synchronization proceeding normally.
New IP address for Sync2It
The server upgrade has been completed and the domain DNS IP address changed to reflect the new server. The proper address for Sync2It.com is now 184.108.40.206, while the old server is at 220.127.116.11. If your bookmark synchronization is not being completed as expected, ping www.sync2it.com and make sure that you get 18.104.22.168. Since the Domain Host transfer was initiated about 9:00PM on May 28th, 2004, it could be as late as May 30th before everyone is rerouted to the new machine. Even after that, it's possible that a local DNS cache is holding the old nameserver IP so if you have any trouble syncing, please first verify that you are actually connecting to the proper server by pinging sync2it.com.
In case you don't know how to do this, in Windows select "Start->Run" and type "cmd" or "command" and then "ping www.sync2it.com", verify you see the phrase "Ping statistics for 22.214.171.124".
Migrating the Database
The Sync2It database has grown to about 1.2 gig (including indexes) which made it a bit more complex to transfer than I had anticipated. Normally when moving a mysql database, you would use mysqldump to create a db.sql file, then run "mysql new_db < db.sql" and while this is actually what I did to move the database, it took more than 6 hours to run. This is really unacceptable for routine backups. There is another method for moving huge mysql databases which involves directly copying the .MYD and .MYI files and then copying them back into the database directory to restore the db. Through this method, I was able to restore the 1.2 gig Sync2It database in about 2 minutes. In the future, this will be our standard backup plan.
Sync2It's Server Upgrade [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:09:31 AMI'm moving Sync2It to a new, more powerful server. This is scheduled to occur on Thursday morning, May 26th, 2004. In order to keep the database current and minimize downtime, I'm going to disable client syncing between the hours of 6AM to 11:59AM, MDT. Any changes made to your local favorites will be accomplished when syncing is turned back on at noon.
The new server has updated OS and management tools as well as increased bandwidth needed to run Sync2It. This is not the performance upgrade that I'm still anticipating will need to be done by the end of the year.
This is a fairly extensive procedure, but it's a good test of our backup and recovery plan. This is also very safe and I don't anticipate any trouble at all with the transfer. As always, I encourage you to make a backup copy of your personal bookmarks by using Sync2It's Bookmark Manager (or by making a copy of your 'favorites' directory located under 'Documents and Settings' and your personal login on a windows machine.)
Sync2It's Affiliate Program [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 12:51:01 PMBy request, Sync2It now offers an affiliate program. As long as we all have to chip in to pay for our own server, why not make money to pay for your subscription? This is a simple single tier affiliate program that pays a base rate of 30%, but offers this unique incentive. If you become
Sync2It's affiliate, I will place your website in our "Feature Sites" folder that appears in every new users task bar menu. Your website will automatically appear on thousands of computer desktops just by being an active affiliate.
So it is doublely beneficial to you to join, not only do you make money everytime a new user subscribes to the service, you get your site promoted on thousands of desktops around the world.
Sign up for Sync2It's affiliate program today!
SSL Certificate Added [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 01:28:12 PMI added a Secure Certificate to the site today. This should elminate the security window from popping up when you were transferred to Paypal's secure server for payment. I'm feeding them an image for the checkout page that was coming from a non-certificated secure server and therefore a security warning was popping up during the checkout process.
If you notice any other problems, please send your email's to firstname.lastname@example.org and I will try to get them fixed right away.
Sync2It Server Migration [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:21:18 AMSync2It is now running on a dedicated server! Now we have some room to grow.
The server migration is complete. The nameservers were changed last evening and are propagating through the net today. My system here in Colorado is resolving to the new IP address now after only about 10 hours. It may take another day for everyone to back in sync.
I've taken special care to make sure that the database was transferred successfully, manually incorporating any changes since 2pm (US - Mountain time) yesterday. I will check it periodically incase someone happens to register a new account using the old server then has their account disappear when the nameserver resolves in their area. No need to re-register, I'll move your information over later today.
There are a few issues that I've noticed, the Sync2It search engine is not working correctly for instance and I'll have these cleared up over the next few days.
New Dedicated Server for Sync2It! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 12:54:51 PMWe will be registering our 1000th user tomorrow and as promised, I am moving Sync2It.com to it's own dedicated IBM xSeries Server. Sync2It will now be the only BookmarkSync Service on the web with it's own dedicated server and that should mean alot to those of you interested in privacy and security. It's will also be more secure, being hosted in a tier 1 data center.
This new server should bring better responsiveness to the site too as the current system is hosted on a server with 218 other web sites using a shared IP address.
The move will take place over the next several days and there will need to be some setup work done on the server prior to moving the Sync2It databases. There will likely be a short period where the system will have to be offline ( 24-48 hours ) while the database is moved and the name servers propagate. We will not want to be adding new users or modifying bookmarks while the database is in transition. I'll be sure to post the outage notification here and your client software will notify you when the transfer is taking place.
Thanks for your continued support!
New Meta Search Engine [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:34:55 AMThe new meta search engine is online! While this is only a beta test version, I don't expect there to be too many problems found. The bookmark database is only about 10% indexed as of this writing, so expect to see thousands of new sites added to the search results every day. In each listing, you'll notice a 'last verified' date associated with it, this is the date that our automated spider visited the website and found it to return a good status code(Status=200). This is the same spider that is used to find your dead links in your own bookmark collections so it's not much extra work to gather some information about the webpage while it's visiting.
The query parser is a just simple pattern match at the moment, but we plan on implementing a full-featured query parser next month ( wildcards, exclusions, etc ). The database needs to be significantly populated in order for a fulltext index to work properly and that will take a few more weeks of spidering websites.
Note: February 13, 2004 - I made some changes to the spider that allowed it to run much faster, therefore I've implemented the fulltext search this morning.
It's important to note that none of your personal bookmark information is in the search engine. For more information on how we gather the information that is presented, click here. We welcome your comments and suggestions about how this unique search resource may be presented to best serve the search needs of the community.
One other note, there are sites contained in the index that are inappropriate for the general viewing audience so they are being filtered out using a 'safe search' filtering feature. This feature is always enabled for non-subscribers as we have no way of validating the age of a user unless they have subscribed. While the database is filtered daily, it is possible that an inappropriate link may be available for up to 24 hours until our scrubber has had a chance to mark it as unsafe. Please bear with us as we work out the bugs.
Subscriptions Implemented [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:59:38 AMI have implemented a subscription based service model for Sync2It today. If you have been with us for over 90 days, you will receive a subscription notification requiring you to subscribe to continue syncing to our servers. I feel that this is the best way to provide the reliability and high level of service that you expect from a BookmarkSync provider.
There are several advantages to staying with Sync2It, and I sincerely hope you do. We serve the largest community of previous SyncIT users providing you with:
We hope you see the value of this unique and valuable software and will join the Sync2It family today!
1/2 Million bookmarks in Sync so far! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 03:05:43 PMThe system has just registered over 500,000 user bookmarks and everything is running well. I expect we will add another 1 million bookmarks to the system this year as the more than 1500 remaining SyncIt loyalists discover that they can be back in sync once again. If you know anyone who used to use SyncIT's BookmarkSync, let them know it's back up and running at Sync2It.com
At it's peak, SyncIT had tens of thousands of loyal users, running on 4 server class machines. I don't expect Sync2It to ever become that large, but with solid support and reliable service, I do expect to provide this valuable service to thousands of users for years to come.
New Client Released [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:19:03 PMWe have released the latest version of the Sync2It client, v1.6.5. This version is integrated with Sync2It's bookmark manager, a client side bookmark utility with many helpful features for managing your bookmark collection. Additionally, the bookmark manager will keep another copy of your bookmarks safely archived so the troubles that occurred with the original syncit database will not cause you to loose your bookmarks. (Of course we keep current backups offline as well)
Since this is a new release, please let us know if you have any trouble with installation or operation of either of the new software components.
Sync2It's Growing! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 09:42:53 PMSync2It added our 500th registered user tonight! We are routinely syncing over 200 accounts every 24 hours. While this growth has been great, it also necessitates some structural changes in the way that the service will have to be offered. Obviously, we are going to have to do something about the shared server that the service is currently hosted on. Also, the current version of the client/server is essentially the same version that crashed and erased everyone's bookmarks. Although I'm backing up the db regularly, that's not safe enough by itself.
We are going to have to charge a small subscription fee to keep the site properly maintained and I think I've settled on about $9.95 a year as a reasonable amount, with a 90 day trial period up front to make sure that the service is what you want and need.
Along with that change, I'm going to be releasing a client-side bookmark manager that is integrated with a new version of the syncit client to provide a *bunch* of new features for client-side bookmark management that I think you'll appreciate. It's in the final stages of testing at the moment and should be ready for release in a couple of weeks.
Sync2It Collections working better... [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 08:49:44 AMWe've had the 'Collections' feature working for some time now, but there were a couple of bugs that remained. ( There still might be one or two ).
I fixed a bug that was not allowing sub-directories to be properly published. You might have noticed it if you tried to publish a subdirectory, nothing showed up.
Well, now it should and Andre's 'Microsoft' collection is now available as well. Thanks Andre! These collections are great tools for everyone and I encourage you to share your collections as you see fit.
Sync2It's Top 10 Lists! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:46:06 AMHere is a new feature I think you'll like! Visit our Top 10 lists to find the top bookmarked sites by topic. I've found some wonderful new sites by browsing through these lists.
If you have a suggestion for a new category, please leave a comment here. These lists will be automatically updated periodically.
Sync2It Express [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:50:41 AMI've been working on restoring the old SyncIT Express functionality. Since none of the html pages, nor the code, nor the database structures existed in the GPL release, it's been interesting to work on. I did find one PHP file that contained most of the field names in a query so I have rebuilt the database structure and both the deliver and retrieve web pages. I'm currently working on the "Activity" page and the actual code for delivering the file.
If anyone remembers how this used to work ( I personally never used the Express functionality on the original site ) your input would be appreciated.
Also, how popular is this feature? Did you use it on the original site?
Top 50 Links! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 12:05:51 PMI've restored the 'Top 50 Links' function. You can get there by clicking on the 'Top 50' menu on the yellow menu to the left on many pages of the site. This feature doesn't use any of your personal information, we simply look through our database for popular URL's and then spider that site for it's 'title' from the meta tag while we are checking the url status. This is part of the normal dead link check that has been reconstructed as well.
Site Statistics [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:30:26 AMI've added a Sync2It statistics page that gives a number of relevant metrics for our site. One of the original developers said that the minimal server should have no trouble hosting 10 users. Well, as you can see, we have registered many times that so far, and though we are running the full server version, there is very little difference between them at this point. I'm seeing no degradation in the normal link updates that occur every few minutes for all of us. ( Usually only a few hundred bytes of information are exchanged during a conversation ) Normal link additions and deletions are taking the usual amount of time as well.
Please check back here now and then as we ramp up our user base. Your input is very important for finding bugs and getting the system back to where it should be. If you would like, we can turn this space into a full-blown blog, if that would help. For now, I welcome your comments on any of these news updates. ( Even just a comment that everything is working well for you would be helpful - Thanks!)
Survey Says! [News] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 09:59:26 AMI rebuilt the original SyncIt Survey page (which requires a new results table in the database). When you complete the survey, you will be taken to a page where you can download the world famous SyncIt Shuttle! Get your SyncIt collectors edition shuttle today by filling out our survey. Click here.
