Connection Problems? [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 12:14:32 PMProblem: Yellow or Grey arrows on the system tray icon with the status of "Server unavailable". No synchronization occurring.
History: This problem apparently was caused by changing the DNS entries for Sync2It.com while performing routine network maintenance. The exact mechanism that introduced the bug is unknown at this time but an extra "w" was stored in the URL of the registry entry that Sync2It uses to communicate with the server. You can verify this bug by right-clicking on the Sync2It icon in your system tray and selecting "Tools->Find Duplicate Links". A browser window will contain the incorrect URL in the address bar and no web page will be loaded. (Note the 4 w's in the address)
How to fix the problem:
Step 1: From the 'Start' button, select 'Run' and type regedit.
Step 2: Navigate to this registry folder: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sync2It\BookmarkSync
Step 3: Verify that the settings for 'Root' and 'Server' are correctly set to http://www.sync2it.com and not http://wwww.sync2it.com (Note that there are 4 w’s).
You can now right-click on the client icon in your system tray and select 'Synchronize Now' and you should be back in sync.
New beta client available [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 03:41:27 PMI have just released beta version 8 of the 1.8.1 client. I apologize for the delay in getting a bugfix out. I had to build a new development box, and it took a bit of time to get everything installed. This new box should make it easier to get new releases out more often.
This is a minor bugfix to try to address a client crashing problem that occurs when links with no URL are entered into the bookmarkset. Internet Explorer traps this condition, not letting you enter a link with an empty URL. Firefox allows it without protest. The Sync2it client now traps this condition and doesn't crash. (A bookmark with a blank URL will be expired on the next sync but can be recoverd with "Undelete")
This new release is available at: http://www.sync2it.com/download/beta
I appreciate your feedback as usual.
SMF Forum problem [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:46:20 AMWe've been having some trouble with the SMF forum for the past several weeks. I've been trying to determine the exact cause of the trouble and have been having a bit of difficulty. I've upgraded the forum code, optimized the database and scoured the SMF bug report forums trying to find what's wrong and as yet, I haven't found it.
I'll keep looking.
Server side update [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 04:29:21 AMAs a result of testing with the new librarian, Susie, I've found an issue with the server side processing of bookmarks. It seems some authors place embedded line feeds or carriage returns within the 'title' tag of their web pages. IE strips any line feeds before it creates a link as the file system won't accept these or a few other characters. However, other browsers don't use the file system but rather an HTML document that in theory, doesn't care about line feeds. If a link with a linefeed or carriage return (ascii 10 or 13) is uploaded, the server will store it but the client will crash when updating the new link.
In order to deal with this, I've added a line of code to the server side synchronization piece that strips LF or CR codes from the link title prior to sending it to the client. You should see no effect whatsoever on your side. This should however, take care of some pesky client crashing problems that we see now and then.
Please let me know right away if you notice any problems. email@example.com
Publishing Collections [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 02:56:10 PMThe collections section of Sync2It has received a lot of my attention recently. I've fixed many bugs over the past several days including being able to publish subfolders and being able to syndicate your published folders via RSS. There was also a bug that caused published folders to not display their content. All that should be a thing of the past now.
Please try publishing one of your collections and then distribute that via RSS. Tell me if you find any problems please at firstname.lastname@example.org
Server down Sunday [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 12:39:28 PMWell that was exciting! I normally reboot the servers once a month or so just to keep everything running smoothly. This month, being at the new data center, it was the first time that I rebooted this new server. It went down just fine but never came back. 45 minutes later, everything appears to be back up and running normally. Turns out that one of the backup drives was mounted incorrectly, halting the boot process. Everything should be fixed now. Sorry about the downtime...
Version 1.7.2 [beta] available [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 03:54:39 PMThere have been a few reports of version 1.7.1 crashing when a notebook comes out of hibernation and also when a network connection was unavailable. This latest version should take care of that issue.
Subscriptions [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 08:03:23 PMI've fixed the updating of subscriptions to the client popup window. Now you will see your subscriptions the way the documentation states it should be. The little newspaper icon never has worked for me, I don't think it worked on the original syncit site either!
If you haven't published any of your bookmarks, why not consider creating a bookmark folder just for sharing with others? Take a look at the collections area on Sync2It. I've found some great sites through these collections, thank you to all that have contributed some great links!
Dead and Deleted Links [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 11:18:18 AMWhen the GPL version of the BookmarkSync code was released, there was no mechanism to remove expired links and also the dead link portion of the code was missing. I've been working on a dead link scanner and also adding some extra fields to the bookmarks database. At present, the dead links scanner uses the CURL library to read the title of a page and the http status code of the link, it stores these along with the date of check in the bookmarks table. I'm considering adding several more fields to provide more information for our popular links ticker when I get that going. The additional fields that I'm thinking about adding are 'description', 'keywords', 'links_in', and 'author'. This information would be extracted from the page's meta tags while the scanner was verifying the status code.
Note: 12/4/2003 I've added the delete code to client.php. Whenever you add or delete a link, we will also delete links with an expired date older than 10 days. I think this gives you enough time to undelete something if you want to but also helps keep the db maintained.
Note: 12/12/2003 Some users have reported links being randomly deleted. I've removed the automatic deletion code until I can examine it in detail this weekend. I suspect that the SQL query will need to be modified.
Note: 12/13/2003 As you may be aware, when the database structures were released to the GPL, there was no database documentation whatsoever. It's been a labor of love and frustration bringing Sync2It back to a fully functioning version of the original SyncIt site. This problem was my fault ( again ), I had misinterpreted the relationship between the bookmarks table and the link table. I thought it was a one-to-many with a unique person id but in fact, it's simply one-to-many, the person id is not unique. I was deleting expired links AND removing the link from the bookmarks table when that bookmark was still required by other users. I've modified the query to only remove expired links and leave the bookmarks alone. I think this will do the trick. If you notice any problems, please email me at email@example.com
Apostrophes not being handled correctly. [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:19:00 AMThere was a bug in the client code not allowing apostrophes not being handled correctly. I believe that I found the offending piece of code and have fixed the problem. If you notice any links with duplicate aprostrophes, just edit them back to normal. The problem should not re-occur from here on out.
Please let me know if there is any confirmed sighting of this bug again.
UPDATE - 11-29-2003 Ahh, the law of unintended consequences... What looked like an easy fix is going to take a bit more time. The server side client code, while not that complex, must accomodate for a variety of add/delete commands. I'm in the process of detailing the logic of this piece of code and should have it completed in a few days. Sorry for the delay.
Registration problems? [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 07:31:13 AMI've noticed some issues with the registration process. If you encounter any problems signing up, please let us know about it. We are using the full server version of BookmarkSync so there is some debugging left to do.
Also, even if everything works well for you, please let us know where we can improve the clarity of the registration process.
Problem with Commas [Bug Reports] - Jack - admin@sync2It.com @ 10:43:39 PMThere is a known bug with links containing commas. Commas continue to be added to links as time goes by.
Note: 12/4/2003 This bug has been addressed.
